One Day in the Week.

One Day in the Week, a new youth musical, deals with two young students from different cultures, Australian and Chinese, living in contemporary Melbourne, trying to work out their relationship, as well as personal and family issues.

With more than 4 million people, and rapidly rising, Melbourne is a dynamic city on track to become Australia’s largest. It attracts many people to live here, and about 6.5 % of its people, ie. 300,000 are of Chinese background. Yet these remarkable developments have been little noted in the arts. The creators of One Day in the Week want to put some of this contemporary life on the musical stage.

Melbourne is internationally known as a centre of musical theatre, which draws large audiences each year, and brings millions into Victoria’s economy. The public are clearly attracted by the power of song, in a narrative context, to convey and illuminate emotion. This is a genuinely original concept, already recognised and welcomed by members of the Melbourne Chinese community, a musical which draws on the lived experience of our vibrant city and its rich culture.
